Flicker through the Frost

How do you cope when your hope fades away?
How do you try when each cry raids a way
You could escape,
Leaves each path agape,
A hole you can’t crawl out of?
How do you ask for help when each task for help
Is worse than the problem you started with?
I hang on tight,
Knuckles turning white
As I squint at the light
In the distance.
Try to be tough,
Pray it is enough
To stay on the path of
Least resistance.
Like a candle upon a deck
In the middle of a snowstorm,
My efforts soon exhaust.
The flame sputters, spatters,
Battered and bothered,
Fighting to flicker through the frost.
How do you move when improvement evades you?
How do you fight when the night just persuades you
To sit and rest?
You’ve done your best,
But the monster can’t be won.
How do you survive when the things thrive
On your fear and your dear hope?
You can’t beat the beast;
Grendel will always feast,
But fighting is the least
That you can do.
Through the mud and rain,
Like an iron-clad Dane,
Push through the pain
And power through.
Like a candle upon a deck
In the middle of a snowstorm,
My efforts soon exhaust.
The flame sputters, spatters,
Battered and bothered,
Fighting to flicker through the frost.
The wax soon wanes
The fuse’ll fizzle
As the light drains
In the constant drizzle.
How do you cope when your hope fades away?
Like a candle upon a deck
In the middle of a snowstorm,
My efforts soon exhaust.
The flame sputters, spatters,
Battered and bothered,
Fighting to flicker through the frost.
